## Polymer Nanocomposites - Introduction

In general, composites are materials that consist of two different phases with a recognizable phase boundary. You can e.g. Be arranged in layers or homogeneously distributed as a dispersion.

A special area of ​​materials science deals with polymeric nanocomposites. These dispersions consist at least of a plastic as a matrix and mixed fillers, fibers or metal particles. The additives have a size in the range of 10-100 nanometers ($10−8$-$10−7m$).

By adding the additives, the properties of the matrix polymer can be changed, so that a composite material is created with material properties that could not be achieved with the individual components alone.

The effect of the nanoparticles on the properties of the composite depends on their particle size and shape, their concentration and their interaction with the selected matrix polymer.

Because of the special properties of nanoparticles and nanocomposites, processes had to be modified or newly developed both for the production of these materials and for their further processing.
