Thickener

Thickeners are substances that increase the consistency of a medium, i.e. make it more viscous. Usually this is a liquid, mostly water or aqueous solutions. The consistency is strongly related to the rheological properties of the medium. An interplay of viscosity, thixotropy, flow properties, viscoelasticity and surface tension has an effect here. The thickening effect is very often based on the formation of gels, but the association of micelles can also play a role.

Thickeners are used, for example, in varnishes, paints and printing inks, puddings, jams, jellies, aspic, ice cream, toothpaste, shampoos and other cosmetics, but also in blood substitutes and fire extinguishing agents.
